2013 Arizona Trail Race

To all my fellow supporters, friends and family,

Lets start off with an intro video made by my Brazilian friend MaurĂcio Cervenka about the Arizona Trail, hope he doesn't get mad I shared it.  He does awesome work video work.  Password is mauricio123

As many of you may know last year I competed in the 2012 Arizona Trail Race event.  It is a 750 mile mountain bike race south to north across the state.  In short I was disqualified for hitch hiking to get food just South of Mormon Lake outside of Flagstaff some 40 Miles.  Even though I didn't move forward on the race course I did use outside assistance which for this particular BikePacking Race is against the rules.  On the "Divide Race" which is how I learned about this race it is legal to use transportation of course as long as you continue back to the place where you left the course...for more info on that story click this blog entry

So this year I’m back to give it my best.  I greatly appreciated all the social media support many of you gave me last year.  I hope you can continue to support me this year and maybe even ride your bike while I’m on mine.

The race starts this Friday April 19th at 630AM.  Ill be wearing a GPS tracking device and will check my phone once a day if I can, but love hearing from everyone it REALLY HELPS.  Facebook is the best for that.  Below are some helpful websites and links to follow my progress.  Please try to fix up and ride your bike while I'm gone.  I promise it won't hurt you.

This is the official tracking software of the event. You can use it best from a home computer and track distance along the route and lots of other data information.

This is a mobe app that doesn’t require a download just go to from your phone and click on the Arizona Trail Race.

Ill post updates as best I can on here.

This ain't that...

Tough Mudder Mesa, AZ 2013...

from the Tough Mudder website... "Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, 700,000 inspiring participants worldwide to date, and more than $5 million raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world."

Clinton Jackson does an awesome job getting the mudders pumped.

I know everyone has heard about these mud, obstacle run challenges that are popping up all over the globe.  I remember doing the Camp Pendleton Mud Run as a team of 5 back in 2003 and having a really good time, thanks again Ed for the invite.  It took us just under an hour and we covered 10K and all the proceeds went to Camp Pendleton and the Marines so I was stoked.

Since then I've personally stayed away from these due to there high entry fees, super crowds, usually short distances and sense of desiring more when I was done.  But one recently caught my eye.  It is called the Tough Mudder World Championships.

In this event you cover the same 11 mile course for 24 hours, non stop, winner take all $15,000.  So here's the catch you have to qualify by participating in one of there sanctioned Tough Mudder races.

OK I'll bite.  $160 dollars later I'm registered for the first one in my state.  Mesa, AZ 2/24/13.  This race has some 20 or so obstacles that extend over 11 miles.  Tough Mudder brands this event as a "challenge" not a "competition."  There is a lot of emphasis on Teamwork, and working together to help your fellow mudder.  They don't endorse it as a timed event, but in order to qualify for "Worlds" you have to be in the top 5% of your day.  I don't really know what that means because if you put people in front of me its a race, if you do a count down start its a race, As long as there is a start and finish line its a race.  This is just how I think..

Fast forward here I am the day after racing mountain bikes in Sierra Vista for nearly 4 hours its roughly 8:45AM in Mesa, AZ the temps are about 40-low 50's (at best) strong wind out of the North around 30mph and there are a ton of everyday people in running attire with sharpie numbers on there forehead like below.
Example of dressed up Mudders
I started at the back of the pack in the first wave of bought 150 mudders and had decided that I was going to have a blast, I love being cold but not freezing and I love obstacles.  By the 2nd obstacle,"Artic Enema" as seen below, I was in the top 15.

Artic Enema Ice Bath, sorry no pics of me.  This obstacle was no joke.
Froze my ass off for the next 2 miles
The race moved on I pushed and pushed to the top, the competition was on point and I was wondering if I would catch the leader.  There were a few of the front guys that got turned around on the course and missed a few obstacles so it worked out to my advantage, although this is technically not a competition you do have to complete the obstacle in order and at least attempt them.  By mile 6 I hit my Gel Pack and FRS chew and moved on.  I picked someone off every mile and by mile 9 I could see the leader about 1 minute ahead.

Electric eel.  I DON'T LIKE ELECTRICITY... Very unpredictable when its going to zap you.

Up the big wall

The finish line and again the electricity is not my favorite.  It's like being knocked out.
I had no body control and just fell over the hay bail.
I crossed the line in 1hour 41minutes and completed all obstacles.  First for my wave.  Let's see what happens in November at World's.

Thanks for reading.

Boatman’s 2013 Adventures

I love building my yearly dream list of events and activities I want to do and 2013 is no different.  Feel free to join in and or throw me some feedback about any of these events.  I am still working on some other ideas too so stay tuned.

Jan 19 – McDowell - Mtn Bike Race– www.mbaa.net
This was an ass whipper.  Huge field of over 50 racers in my Marathon Class, sick as a dog days leading up to the race i caught the flu, ended up 21st overall.

Feb 9 - White Tanks - Mtn Bike Race - www.mbaa.net
Great race.  Huge Team River Cyclery & Sport Turnout.  Ended up 5th in Marathon class and for my first time won some money.  It was only $25 bucks but i'll take it.
Far right long socks

2013 Specialized Epic Expert

Feb 23 - Sierra Vista, AZ - Mtn Bike Race - www.mbaa.net
Awesome course at just over 4,000ft.  Was averaging about 26-27min laps up til the 5th lap when I tore the sidewall.  Mother f'r.  I had been racing all season with no tools and up to this race I had been running super heavy bullet proof tires and well I felt like gambling and I lost.  So I started to run back towards camp where a friendly racer from Trisports.com gave me a tube, co2 and tire iron.  Can't be thankful enough.   He sped off and got to fixing my flat.  Thought I was good to go then had the ever common co2 failure and only got about half in the tube, so back to running again then met up with another racer who gave me his co2 and then I was 100%.  "Pay it forward" charging hard.  I was able to still manage 7 laps and hold on to a 9th place finish.

Feb 24 - Mesa, AZ - Adventure Run - Tough Mudder
See blog entry

Mar 9 – Estrella - Mtn Bike Race - www.mbaa.net
Great race, terrain kicked my arse, set bike up way to stiff.  Still learning about this Specialized Brain suspension.  At about hour 3 I was started to get weak but kept pushing one made about 2 passes on my 5th lap to get me in the $$$ 5th place overall.

Apr 6 - Prescott – Mtn Bike Race
Fast, fast course.  Ran in the front and faded to a 9th place finish.  Everyone was on pace for sure.  Couple nutrition mistakes.  I felt decent all race but dam everyone was just hauling major ass.

Apr 19 - ArizonaTrail Race - Bike Packing Race - 300 mile
see post

May 18 - Flagstaff – Mtn Bike Race - www.mbaa.net

This was a wild ending to a tough season.  Held 3rd overall for the season in the Men's Marathon class.  My first time completing the entire season.  Not to shabby, lots of room for improvement.

June 8 – 12 Hours of Temecula – Mtn Bike Race

Kicked ass as part of the River Cyclery & Sport Team.  Podium 3rd in 3 Person Male.

June 9 - Holcomb Valley Trail Run - Trail Run 50K, 4,000+ feet of elevation gain
This was another ass kicker, especially after the team 12hour race the day before.  I wanted to support my new friend and potential Adventure Race teammate Marco.  So we met up at Karen's in Big Bear the night before, prepped our meals and hit the hay.  Start of the race it was obvious it was going to be warm.  I was only able to stay with Marco for the first 3 miles then he slowly faded away.  This was going to hurt but I knew I would finish.  My goal was under 8 hours.  I paced myself and conserved my body.  Took care of some foot management and needed nutrition.  The course did a huge figure eight.  At times I would pair up with other racers for comeradie but ultimately everyone hits walls at different times.  The last 2 hours I felt great.  Shirt off, getting some sun I was hauling to the finish.  I was about 4 miles to the end on a long descent when I caught my friend Marco and he wasn't looking good.  He pushed so hard in the beginning he hit a massive dehydration, cramping wall and was forced to walk the last 6 miles.  Marco is a beast and one hell of an athlete and his pace in the beginning was impressive.  We finished the race as a team in just under 7hours 15minutes.  Beating our time goal and also out team goal.

July 27 - Prescott 12 Hours at Night - Mtn Bike Race - Prescott, AZ
Alex Romero and I before the course turned muddy.

The number to beat.

1st Overall and 1st in Duo Mens
Alex and I raced one hell of a race.  Those kids behind us were the real deal.  Great race everyone even the track was a mud bog for the first 5 laps.

TOOK JOB IN DURANGO, COLORADO BEEN GETTING ADJUSTED.

October 5 - Dolores 100 - Southwest Colorado – Mtn Bike Race

Nov 9 – 12 Hours of Temecula – Mtn Bike Race
Nov 23 – Attack the Crack – Mtn Bike Race
Nov ?? - Tough Mudder World Championship - Somewhere Cold

Baja California Offroad Dirtbike Adventure

This is my story of traveling in to Mexico and riding off road, dualsport dirtbikes through Baja over 5 days covering 850 miles of terrain.

Back in April a friend of mine, Rich better known as "Schulee"to most" said he would join me in riding mountain bikes on the Arizona Trail if I would, in return, join him in riding dirtbikes through Baja later that year.  It was a "no brainer" easy yes as I've been waiting for something over the top to do with my Suzuki DRZ400 I bought the previous year.  The dates were set for November 4-8, 2012.  This was going to be a little different approach to my normal adventures as I was letting go of my OCD reins and Schulee was going to handle all of the logistics.  Where we were staying, daily mileage, fuel, food, direction, drop off, pickup and terrain were all his doing.  I did agree to back him up and enter all the waypoints from the cue sheets in to my gps and we shared ideas in our gear list aside from that I was blind.
Example of GPS Guide.com cue sheets
Schulee did a great job hunting for information and purchased some tips from an online company called Baja GPS.  The company had cue cards that would guide you along and GPS coordinates that would co-incide with the cards every couple miles or so.  Sounds easy enough.
2006 Suzuki DRZ400 and Full Baja Gear List
So to be safe Schulee and I headed in to our Lake Havasu backyard with 50% of our gear for what we called a shake down ride.  I had just added a desert tank and was borrowing this huge backpack that felt nothing but awkward.  In our 70 mile shakedown ride we got lost, had to back track 20 miles, rode in the dark with only one working headlamp, dropped a chain on Schulee's "bullett proof" XR and fixed it in the dark, I ran out of gas then almost got hit by a car walking my bike on HWY95, then in bad driver in return felt bad and gave me a gallon of gas.  In short we were ready for the unpredictable terrain of Mexico
Just before crossing the border in to Mexico - DAY 1

Here we go...
Day 1 San Diego, CA - Ensenada, Mexico (Beto's House)
Mileage 70 miles

Grandma Schulee dropped us off in San Ysidro seconds away from the Tijuana Mexico border crossing.  From here we geared up, made a few last minute decisions, turned on the SPOT tracker and away we went.  It had been since 2008 when I last went in to Baja so a few noticeable changes at the border but aside from that most everything was pretty standard.  Federal Officers (kids with machine guns) were present, everything is in Spanish, people walk on side of highway, kids stand in front of cars on laps of others and most vehicles on the road are barely road worthy in American standards, typical things like that.  We both smiled because thats what draws us here, that little piece of chaos.   I should probably add that both of us speak less than 10 words in spanish but both felt 5 days of immersion would fix the language gap.
Lobster lunch at Ortega's Puerto Nuevo

Our first day was an easy all highway ride to my Adventure Racing friend Beto Alevar who resides in Ensenada.  We did stop in the ever popular Puerto Nuevo for Lobster and paid almost American Prices when we ate at Ortega's, but the food was great and the service was awesome.  Back on the bikes we arrived at Beto's house after a little game of GPS hide and seek.  Which is where you have a point on a GPS and no directions to help you get there.  We arrived Beto made us feel at home, showed us some great new friends who live on the beach, great road side eats, and also the always popular Papas & Beer which had an awesome cover band.  We played it easy, while Beto played tourguide, tomorrow was a long first day.
Schulee with the Pacific behind him at Ortega's
Beto's Casa in Ensenada

Waterfront Singlewide in Ensenada $180 / Month.
Beers and fresh crab with friends $20.
Surfbreak from your porch priceless.

Sunset Day 1
Papas & Beer Ensenada
Beto and Schulee grabbing a bite to eat at one of Beto's favorite Taco Bars.
Typical 3 foot major roadway hazard.
Day 2
Ensenada - Ojos Negros - Santo Tomas - San Vincente - Valle De Trinidad - Mike's Sky Ranch
Mileage - 220.6 Miles

Sometimes pictures say it better than words.  Today was a long ride, made a few errors in the navigation but all in all no whammies.  Gas was a bit of a concern but we over came.

Showed up to the local PEMEX gas station in Ojos Negros to find a sign that read
NO VENDE DE MANANA (no gas til tomorrow) after some investigative work
we arrived at this little piece of heaven and filled up the tanks.
Me and my huge pack was a challenge throughout the ride.  Next time ill bring my Osprey and not look back.  This pack was super crap design and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you crash a lot.  Its built super heavy and requires the tool waist belt to hold it up.

Typical Boatman overpacked as usual

Amazing ocean views out of Santo Tomas

Schulee changing his flat and just lucked out that it happened right on the beach with
gear to help in the change.

Arrived at Mike's Sky Ranch after dark.  PS they just turned the lights on when we arrived.
Famous place for Baja racers and offroader's and no one was around.

Me inside the drink of Mike's Sky Ranch.  Years of
memorabilia and really cool pictures.

Day 3
Mike's Sky Ranch - Observatory - El Coyote Ranch - San Matias - San Felipe
Mileage - 159.8 Miles
Mike's Sky Ranch
Having arrived at Mike's under the cover of darkness it was cool to see how scenic it was the next morning.  Slept incredibly well but in my honest opinion $70 a person per night is super steep.  But it does include 2 meals and its such a Baja "Staple" we had to do it.  We headed out towards the Observatory up and down some super super technical terrain until we hit El Coyote Ranch.

El Coyote Ranch for a fuel stop, look close and you can see rancher getting fuel
out of a 55 gallon jug.  Through all the unique gas stops never had a motor problem.

Schulee and I at the Observatory entrance.  Mileage was super off, road an extra 40 miles.
Saw lots of wildlife and a couple Bobcat's crossed our path.

Our favorite little fuel and food stop in San Matias, we stopped here twice we liked it so much.

Wide open down the dry lake bed was an experience ill never forget.

Costa Azul Hotel San Felipe
We were excited to get to San Felipe and hoped for a lil night life but apparently the town was recovering from the Shrimp festival the weekend prior and was dead as could be.

Day 4
San Felipe - Puertecitos - San Matias - Valle De Trindad
Mileage 179.5 Miles
Rock Crawling section from Puertecitos to San Matias
By far the toughest section was the super soft sand wash from the HWY to the Jeep Road.  We also encountered about a 100 yard section of washed out rocks that were tough to find any rideable lines on.  But this is Baja and we worked together and got through it.  Schulee loves Endurocross so he kicked ass at this section I struggled and was frustrated but made it through.

Jose's Camp along the dry lake bed.  We stopped in for some cervesa and fuel.  Hard to gather
it from a picture but this is the middle of NO WHERE
.

Jose's is where I realized I really need to learn some Spanish.

Jose and Schulee

Day 5
Valle De Trinidad - Laguna Hanson Ranger Station - Santa Veronica - Tecate - Buckman Springs, Ca.
Mileage 165.2

Hotel in Trinidad, by far the best deal of the trip $30/night
Solving a little SLIME issue with my valve stem before the last sections

Saving the best for last.  Last day was awesome, decomposed granite and cool temps, we hauled ass
through here all the way up to the singletrack before Santa Veronica.

Cemetary

After a short detour where the trail got relocated from new ranches.  Had to
do about a 20 mile detour which caused us to buy some fuel from a Rancher.

Underwear change in the middle of a ride.  Thats how I roll if I'm
uncomfortable I change.

This kind rancher had no gas to sell us so he siphoned some out of his truck and sold it to us.
Took everything I had not to bring this puppy home.
Me, Karen and Rich at the takeout of Buckman Springs, Ca rest area.

So thats it.  No major drama.  No bandit's,  No drug lords.  I had an awesome time in Baja and am inspired to bring some friends back and do this adventure again with a few changes.  Thanks always for reading.

My October 2012 Record Attempt of Arizona Trail 750

Team SOLE Base Camp, Big Bear, CA
Paul, Karen, some house guest and myself
going over the course and gear list.
I'm less than two days before the start and I've been posting some information on FaceBook about the event.  With that a lot of people have been asking me why I want to do this course again?  It absolutely was painful at times and I will never forget those memories, but reflecting back on accomplishments like this are what drives me.  If anyone knows me they know I'm a competitor, its my driving force.

99% of my gear is packed aside from a couple last minute preps.  Although the moon is in its waining phase things are looking bright for this event.

I recruited Paul Romero who is also seeking some redemtion on this course from April where he was plagued with some mechanically issues and schedule conflicts that had him starting 4 days later then the rest of the field.

Paul and I will team up to get to the race but once the wheels are rolling its ever man for himself.

Mauricio, giving his home country of Brazil a video interview about the
Arizona Trail 750 and especially the 26 mile Grand Canyon portage.

Hard to explain in words the logistics that are involved in working 3 different jobs and attempting to schedule an event like this with decent weather, vacation, and money.  The timeline window is very short so everything needs to be on point.  Paul and I were lucky enough to have a great friend, Mauricio Cervenka, who is visiting the United States for 2 months accept to drive us to the race start and then pick us up at the race finish in Utah.  This alone is a huge undertaking.

Big Bear 55 mi. race weekend before
the AZT attempt on my new
29er Ellsworth Evolve SST2
So thankful everything is coming together hope you stay tuned and follow me along on another Boatman Adventure.

Special thanks to all the support from the following companies for this adventure.  Full spec gear list to be revealed soon.
-MSR

Last picture before I go was taken by Rebecca Mitchell of Big Bear at the US Cup Endurance Championship race October 6.

Check out this cool video Mauricio made of us attempting the AZT on Ellsworth Bikes.
